The Colors of Birth

The Colors of Birth contains stories that represent a rainbow of experience through color imagery chosen by each contributor. As birthing is a process of “going with the flow and letting go,” each woman was asked to tap her instinctual perception and choose a color that best represented her childbirth experience. For many contributors, this encouraged a deeper reflection. Memory’s outline now colored in, their stories unfolded at a deeper, soulful level.

Testimonials

“I loved reading about all the options and considerations of these women. It will help me be supportive when my own daughter gets pregnant.” Lolly

“Every night before bed I read a story. I felt a part of each woman’s journey as I prepared for the birth of my own baby in March.” Anne

“My midwife loved the book. How can I get her a copy?” Julie

“My friends and I are having a ‘colors’ mom’s group. We are excited to talk about which color we chose and why. Next month our moms are going to join us. This is so much fun.” Kathleen

“I'd love to meet some of the other Moms from your book. I have really enjoyed reading their stories, too.” Janet (contributor)

“I loved the book, it filled me with an amazing sense of pride and admiration for other women. As a matter of fact, we had Orions first birthday party on the 13th of January. I had kept the book a secret and then in front of 20 of our closest friends and family I announced the book and made a little speech about Orion and Mike and my love for them. It was so cool! I gave each of our parents a copy, too.” Darcy (contributor)

“I have to say that my son’s birth was very much about color and the color violet in particular. Thinking about this helped me to look deeper and more insightfully into his birth. I was able to see how “colorful” his birth really was and how very violet it was.
I had my 3rd baby, my second son, last spring – April 5th, on his big sister’s 6th birthday. His birth was very green! It was a beautiful, warm, spring day and everywhere I looked there was green—from the color of our bedroom walls to the grass to the placenta prints my doula made for me. All variations of green. It was a fantastic, easy birth and I look forward to re-reading his birth story next month. I always read them to my children on their birthday—I guess it’s our birth-day isn’t it?” Julie (contributor)

“Thank you for including the poem from Mary Louise, the mother of the still-born. Not only was it very moving, but knowing that she could find beauty when thinking back upon such a devastating event helps to dispel every woman’s fear of this result. You could have backed away from its inclusion, but it made the Danny’s live birth all the more triumphant.” Kathryn
